Two kinds of wildlife in one day

A full-day speedboat trip that crosses from Koh Samui towards the Khanom coast on the mainland to look for the area’s rare pink-grey dolphins, then snorkels at Koh Tan, lands on Koh Madsum (Pig Island) to meet the pigs, and stops for a Thai lunch on a mainland beach. Hotel transfers are included.

The dolphins off Khanom are Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, which turn pink as they age. They are wild animals: sightings are common but never guaranteed, and the boat keeps a respectful distance. The crossing to the dolphin area takes about 45 minutes.

This is the trip for wildlife lovers and families who want more than a beach day. If you only have half a day, the speedboat tour covers Pig Island and Koh Tan in 4–5 hours.

Questions about this trip

Will we definitely see dolphins?

No one can promise wild animals. Sightings off Khanom are frequent, but some days the dolphins stay out of sight. The rest of the day runs as planned either way.

Why are the dolphins pink?

They are Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins. Calves are grey, and many adults turn pink as they age. Khanom, on the mainland opposite Koh Samui, is one of the best places in Thailand to see them.

Do we get close to the dolphins?

The captain keeps a respectful distance and does not chase them. Please stay seated and quiet near the animals.

Is the Pig Island fee included?

No. Bring about 50 THB per person in cash for the Koh Madsum fee.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a change of clothes, sandals, sunscreen (reef-safe if possible), a camera and a copy of your passport.

Planning tip: Choose a calm-season day between February and September for the smoothest open-water crossing. See weather by month.
