Koh Rap island: beaches, kayaks and camping

The quietest of the three south islands, for a slow beach day or a night in a tent.

Last updated 25 October 2026 · By the Pig Island Samui team

Koh Rap is a small, quiet island off Koh Samui’s south coast, a short boat ride from Pig Island (Koh Madsum) and Koh Tan. You pay about 50 THB per person in cash to land. Expect soft sand, kayaks for about 300 THB, simple toilets and very few people.

Where is Koh Rap?

Koh Rap (เกาะราบ, “flat island”) lies a few kilometres off Samui’s south coast. It sits in the same small group as Koh Madsum and Koh Tan. By boat it is roughly 6 km from Koh Tan. Boats usually leave from Thong Krut pier, like our other south-island trips.

Some charter companies call it “Deer Island”. Visitors report deer and a few pigs living on the island. In 2021 Thai media also reported a green turtle nesting on the island. That makes it a place to tread lightly.

What does it cost, and what are the rules?

Prices below were last checked in October 2026. They are set on the island and can change, so carry spare cash.

The drinks rule surprises people. You may bring a picnic, but buy water, soft drinks and beer on the island. There are toilets, but they are basic. There is no ATM.

Tip: Bring small notes. A 1,000 THB note can be hard to change on a small island.

What does a day on Koh Rap look like?

Koh Rap is about doing less. There is no big restaurant, no jet ski strip and no queue for photos. Here is how a full-day private trip can run. Times are approximate and your captain adjusts them to the sea:

  1. 08:00Hotel pickup Private transfer to Thong Krut pier.
  2. ~09:00Koh Rap Land, pay the fee, claim a patch of shade.
  3. MorningSwim and kayak The water is calmest early. Paddle the shoreline.
  4. MiddayPicnic lunch Your own food, drinks from the island.
  5. AfternoonOptional stops Ask the captain about a snorkel at Koh Tan or a visit to the pigs.
  6. 17:00Back at your hotel Sandy, tired, happy.

There are no shops beyond drinks, so pack for a self-sufficient day:

  • Picnic lunch and snacks
  • Cash in small notes for the fee, kayaks and drinks
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, hats and a long-sleeved top
  • A beach umbrella or sarong for extra shade
  • A bag to take all your rubbish back to Samui

The island is small, so you will not need a map. Keep to the beach and paths. Please give any deer and pigs room. Do not chase, lift or feed them.

Kayaking is the main activity on the quieter south islands.

Can you camp on Koh Rap?

Yes. Tents can be rented for about 900 THB per person per night. You get the beach almost to yourself after the day boats leave. It is simple camping: basic toilets and no hotel services.

Camping needs planning. Message us first so we can plan the boat out and the boat back the next day. Bring a torch, insect repellent, a long-sleeved top and enough food. Avoid swimming after dark; jellyfish come closer to shore at night.

Full-day private trip or 3-islands half day?

You have two ways to visit with us. Both are private boats, so the price is per boat, not per person.

Koh Rap Full-Day Private Boat

08:00–17:00 · 9,950 THB per boat. Best for a slow beach day, campers and groups who hate rushing.

Private Longtail: 3 Islands

5–6 hours · 8,450 THB per boat. Koh Madsum pigs, Koh Tan snorkel, kayaks at Koh Rap. Pickup 08:00 or 13:00.

See the 3-islands trip

Our honest view: first-timers should pick the 3-islands trip. You see the pigs, the reef and Koh Rap in one go. Return visitors and campers get more from the full day. Want a shared, cheaper option? See the Pig Island speedboat tour, which skips Koh Rap.

Questions

Koh Rap FAQ

How much is the Koh Rap entrance fee?

About 50 THB per person, paid in cash on the island (last checked October 2026). Some operators say children are free. The fee is not included on our private Koh Rap trips, so bring small notes. For all costs across the south islands, see Pig Island prices.

Can I bring my own food and drinks to Koh Rap?

You can bring your own food, and a picnic is a good idea. Drinks are different: buy water, soft drinks and beer on the island rather than bringing them. Our full-day Koh Rap trip leaves plenty of time for a long lunch.

Can you stay overnight on Koh Rap?

Yes. Tents can be rented for about 900 THB per person per night. Facilities are basic: toilets, but no hotel services. Message us on WhatsApp before you book so we can arrange the boat out and back. Read our booking terms for changes and refunds.

Is there snorkelling at Koh Rap?

Some charter companies list a reef and snorkelling at Koh Rap. For the best snorkel, we stop at Koh Tan, where the shallow reef runs close to the beach. Our 3-islands private longtail covers both islands in one day.

Is Koh Rap good for children?

Yes. The beach is quiet and there is no traffic, so it suits young families. Bring shade, hats and plenty of food, as there is no big restaurant. Keep children back from any deer or pigs. See Pig Island with kids for more family tips.
