Tours & boats

What is Pig Island?

Pig Island is the nickname for Koh Madsum, a small island off the south-west coast of Koh Samui. Pigs roam its white sand beach, alongside a few dogs. There is a beach restaurant, kayaks and a short path to a viewpoint. Most trips also stop at Koh Tan next door for snorkelling. Read our full Koh Madsum guide.

Which Pig Island tour should I choose?

For most people, the speedboat tour is the best value: 4–5 hours, a meal, snorkel gear and hotel transfer from 1,450 THB. Choose the small-group longtail for a slower, traditional boat. Choose the sunset tour for the late light and dinner. Families and groups often prefer a private boat.

What is the difference between a longtail and a speedboat?

A longtail is a traditional wooden Thai boat. It is slower and rides the swell gently, so it suits small children and anyone prone to seasickness. A speedboat is faster and leaves more time on the islands, but it bumps more in choppy water. Compare both on our Pig Island tours page.

How long do the tours take?

Shared tours take about 4–6 hours including hotel transfers. The small-group longtail picks up around 08:15 and returns about 14:00. Private longtails and speedboats run 5–6 hours. The Pink Dolphins and Pig Island tour takes about 6 hours, and the shared sailing yacht about 8. Each tour page lists its own timings.

Is there a sunset tour?

Yes. The Pig Island sunset tour picks up between 13:00 and 14:30. You visit the pigs in the softer afternoon light, cross back as the sun goes down, and have dinner at a beach restaurant. Kayaks and the island fee are included. It costs 1,550 THB per adult and 1,350 THB per child.

Can we book a private boat?

Yes. A private longtail to Koh Madsum and Koh Tan costs 5,950 THB per boat for 5–6 hours. A private speedboat costs 11,950 THB per boat. A three-island longtail including Koh Rap is 8,450 THB. You choose the pickup time and the pace. See all options on our private boat page.

Are there yacht or catamaran trips?

Yes. The shared boutique sailing yacht trip costs 4,500 THB per person for about 8 hours, visiting Pig Island and Koh Tan. For your own group, the Private Catamaran King runs 5 hours for 21,000 THB per boat. The private sailing catamaran runs 8 hours, with sunset sailing, for 27,000 THB per boat.

Prices & payment

How much does a Pig Island trip cost?

Shared tours start at 1,450 THB per adult and 1,250 THB per child on the speedboat. The small-group longtail is 1,750 THB per adult, and the sunset tour 1,550 THB. Private boats start at 5,950 THB per boat. Our Pig Island price guide compares every option and what each one includes.

Is the island entrance fee included?

It depends on the tour. Koh Madsum charges about 50 THB per person, cash, paid on the island (last checked October 2026). It is included on the small-group longtail and sunset tours. It is not included on the speedboat tour or the private longtail. Each tour page states clearly whether the fee is included.

What is included in the price?

Most shared tours include hotel transfer, the boat, a guide, lunch or dinner, drinking water and snorkel gear. Kayaks are included on the speedboat and sunset tours. The speedboat tour page lists everything that comes with it. Drinks at the beach bar and tips are extra. Check each tour for the island fee.

Do children pay less?

Yes, on shared tours. Children pay 1,250 THB on the speedboat tour, 1,550 THB on the small-group longtail and 1,350 THB on the sunset tour. Private boats are priced per boat, so children add nothing to the cost. Ask us how infants are priced on your chosen tour. Our Pig Island with kids guide has more.

How do I pay?

You pay online when you book through the tour page. We then confirm your booking by email and WhatsApp, with your pickup time. Bookings are not final until you receive that confirmation. If you have a question about payment, message us on WhatsApp or email info@pigislandkohsamui.com before you book.

Should I bring cash?

Yes, bring some Thai baht in small notes. You may need it for the island fee of about 50 THB per person, drinks at the beach bar, snacks and tips. Do not expect cash machines on Koh Madsum or the other small islands. Read our how to get to Pig Island guide for more practical tips.

6 questions

The pigs & the island

Are the pigs friendly?

Generally, yes. They are used to visitors and spend much of the day dozing in the shade or wading in the shallows. They are still animals, not props. They can push or nip when they smell food, and mothers protect their piglets. Stay calm, keep food bagged and follow the guide. See our Koh Madsum guide.

Are the pigs well treated?

This is a fair question, and we take it seriously. We ask every guest to follow simple rules: no chasing, lifting, riding or over-feeding. The pigs roam freely and spend the hottest hours in the shade. We have written an honest page on what we know and what we do not: are the pigs well treated?

Can I feed the pigs?

Only if the guide says so, and only with food the guide approves. Too much food, or the wrong food, is bad for the pigs and makes them pushy. Never feed by hand from a bag in front of a crowd. Wash your hands afterwards. Read how we protect the pigs before your trip.

Can I swim with the pigs?

The pigs sometimes wade or swim in the shallows on their own. You can swim nearby, but do not chase them into the water, grab them or hold them. Give mothers and piglets plenty of space. The best swimming and snorkelling is at Koh Tan, next door, where the reef sits close to the beach.

What else is on Koh Madsum?

Besides the pigs, there is a white sand beach, a beach restaurant and bar, kayaks, a viewpoint and the wooden Mad Sum Island sign. Facilities are basic. It is a small island, so tours usually stop there for an hour or so. Many tours then continue to Koh Tan or Koh Rap for snorkelling and lunch.

What is Koh Tan like?

Koh Tan is the larger island next to Koh Madsum. It has small fishing villages, quiet beaches and a shallow coral reef that suits beginners. Some tours have lunch at a Koh Tan beach restaurant. Expect coral and fish rather than big marine life. Our Koh Tan guide covers the snorkel spots.

5 questions

Getting there & pickup

Where do the boats leave from?

Most boats leave from Thong Krut pier in the south-west of Koh Samui. Some leave from Bang Kao, on the south coast. The crossing to Koh Madsum takes about 15–30 minutes by longtail and less by speedboat. Our how to get to Pig Island guide explains the piers and routes.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, on our shared tours and most private boats. We collect you from your hotel or villa on Koh Samui and drop you back after the trip. Private boats include a private transfer. Some remote addresses may cost extra; tell us where you are staying when you book. See all tours with pickup.

What time is pickup?

It depends on the tour and where you stay. The small-group longtail picks up around 08:15. Private boats offer 08:30 or 14:00 pickups, and the three-island trip 08:00 or 13:00. The sunset tour collects between 13:00 and 14:30. We confirm your pickup time by email and WhatsApp after booking. See all tours.

Can I visit Pig Island from Koh Phangan?

Yes, but it takes longer. You first need a ferry or private boat to Koh Samui, then a transfer to the south-west piers. A private speedboat straight from Koh Phangan is the quickest option. Our guide to Pig Island from Koh Phangan explains the choices and timings.

Can cruise ship passengers join?

Yes. We run a Pig Island tour for cruise ship guests, timed to your port call. Price is on request because it depends on your ship’s arrival and departure times. Send us your ship name and date on WhatsApp, and we will plan a trip that gets you back with time to spare.

6 questions

Safety, kids & health

Is Pig Island safe for children?

Yes, with sensible care. The crossing is short and the beach is shallow. Children should wear a life jacket on the boat and stay close to an adult around the pigs. Ask us to confirm child sizes for your date. Our parent’s guide to Pig Island covers boats, timing and packing.

Are life jackets provided?

Yes. Every boat carries life jackets, and we ask children to wear one on every crossing. Adults who are not confident swimmers should wear one too, including while snorkelling. If you need a small child or infant size, ask us to confirm child sizes for your date when you book. See our kids guide.

I get seasick. Which trip is best?

Choose a longtail, which rides more gently than a speedboat. Go in the morning, when the sea is often calmer, and sit near the back. Take a motion-sickness tablet before you board. Our small-group longtail tour is a good choice, or a private longtail if you want to stop when you like.

Can I come if I am pregnant?

Please message us before booking. A speedboat can bump hard in a swell, so we usually suggest a private longtail on a calm morning. Check with your doctor before any boat trip. We will look at the forecast for your date and give you an honest view on WhatsApp.

Can non-swimmers come?

Yes. You do not need to swim to enjoy the trip. Wear a life jacket on the boat and while snorkelling, and stay in the shallows. Many guests simply relax on the beach or watch the pigs. Tell the guide you cannot swim so they can keep an eye on you. See the Koh Tan snorkel spots.

Is the trip accessible for people with limited mobility?

Partly. Boarding a longtail often means stepping down from a pier or wading from the beach. Speedboats can be easier from a pier. Island paths are sand, and the viewpoint path is uneven. Message us on WhatsApp with your needs, and we will tell you honestly which boat and route will work.

7 questions

Booking, changes & weather

How do I book?

Choose a tour on our Pig Island tours page, pick your date and pay online. We then confirm by email and WhatsApp after payment, with your pickup time. If you prefer to talk first, message us on WhatsApp at +66 63 704 0888 or email info@pigislandkohsamui.com. We usually reply quickly during the day.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancel 48 hours or more before departure for a full refund. Between 24 and 48 hours, we refund 50%. Under 24 hours, or if you do not show up, there is no refund. If the captain cancels for weather or sea safety, you choose a full refund or a new date. Full details are in our booking terms.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The captain decides on the morning, based on wind and sea state. If it is not safe, we cancel and you choose a full refund or a new date. Light rain alone does not usually stop a trip. October to December is the wettest period. Read our best time to visit guide.

What is the best time of year to visit?

January to April is usually the driest and calmest period. May to September is hot, with showers, but the south coast generally has good seas. October to December is the wettest, with the north-east monsoon. Trips still run, weather permitting. See our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Pig Island.

How far ahead should I book?

A few days ahead is usually enough outside the busiest weeks. Around Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year and Songkran, book a week or more ahead, especially for private boats. Booking early costs nothing extra, and you can cancel for a full refund up to 48 hours before. Browse all tours.

Can I change my date?

Usually, yes. Message us as early as you can, and we will move you to another date with space. Changes made 48 hours or more before departure are easiest. If the captain cancels for weather, you can move to a new date free of charge. Contact us on WhatsApp or see our booking terms.

Is Pig Island open when Ang Thong is closed?

Yes. Ang Thong Marine Park closes every year from 1 November to 15 December. Pig Island trips keep running in that window, weather permitting. That makes Koh Madsum and Koh Tan a good alternative for late-year visitors. Compare the two in our guide Pig Island or Ang Thong?
